Persimmon Tree published my flash essay “Women’s Choices” in the Short Takes section of their winter edition. The Short Takes theme for the winter publication is Resistance and Resilience. All the selected poems, artwork, essays, fiction, and music reflect that theme.

Stunning piece. Congrats on publication! My mother was never encouraged to do anything other than get married and have children. It was the worst thing she could have done, but in 1950, it’s all she thought she had. We were not encouraged to go to college, but when we did, she was proud-ish, but always with a P.S., the reminder that she never had a choice.

Thank you for the direction to your poem in Persimmon Tree and congrats! A truly marvelous, honest piece. My memories tied to further education due to my mom’s opinion is not so different.

Loved your story, Vickie! I hear so many stories from the older generation of dreams lost simply due to lack of options and opportunities, and it saddens my heart. Good for you for sticking to your guns, and yeah, I bet you made your momma proud!

This story dropped right through the net with a swish. Go-oo-oo-oo-d shot. Practice is making you a short story center court star. Congratulations, again!

Our moms had dreams we never knew about. It catches up with us every now and then, I guess. You sure captured that moment of recognition.

When I was younger, I viewed my mother’s reaction so differently. It’s only being much older that I can see she was coming from a place of her own loss and pain.
