This is where I spent most of my childhood. Our old white farmhouse sat close to a narrow road. The barn on the left belonged to our family. The structures in the background, a barn and a home, belonged to two different neighbors. Our snowbanks ran from the back of the farmhouse toward the neighbor’s barn.

  1. That was lovely and evocative, right down to the chicken noodle soup and the snowball fights that somehow always seemed to bring tears—not to mentions, the dark, streetlight-less nights. If the clouds cooperated, the sky was full of stars! And I remember train lights in the hills of Duluth.

  2. Another delightful childhood story. I loved making snowbank tunnels as a kid. What fun! You described these feelings well!

    • The snow was magical to me as a child. As I spent hours playing in it, I used to think that I would always play in the snow, and I couldn’t imagine why my mom or other adults weren’t outside playing in the snow.
